Fashion propels me, but dance will always be my first love. Today, I discovered Kazuo Ohno, one of the gurus of Butoh, the "dance of utter darkness" that developed in postwar Japan.
Butoh is defined more conceptually than stylistically, often addressing taboos. I love that Ohno's started his career as a gym teacher. He began learning dance in order to teach it to his students at an all-girls school- a job that clearly influenced his subject matter- and was 43 when he had his first dance recital.
